I took this picture in the Thanjavur big temple's main tower(Gopuram). While we were admiring the Chola's architectural exhibit, one old lady came to us and told us to notice a particular spot in the gopuram. I've marked the spot in red in the above picture. In every other place it has identical sculptures on both sides, but in this place alone it has this "particular man with a hat".First of all it is very much confusing to see a sculpture like this so we asked the lady for the reason. She told that the cholas predicted that English would come here and rule the land, so only they had done a sculpture like this. But i'm not convinced with this prediction concepts. I think they might have had some trade affairs with foreigners. So as to symbolize their partnership they had made this sculpture. What do you think?
